About the Author

The title of the play, written by Susan Hill, deals with the issue of people with disabilities. It does not deal with the actual pain of discomfort caused by a physical impairment that plagues a disabled person. Rather it is related to the behavior of the people around him.

Introduction to the Lesson

The play is about a teenager Derry, whose face is burnt and Mr. Lamb who is a disabled old man with a prosthetic leg made of tin. Derry accidentally enters his garden to hide himself from the people who hate him because of his ugly face. Mr Lamb talks to her in a friendly manner. The boy promises her to come again to his garden. Next time his mother advises him not to do so but the boy comes to meet him. His friendship with Mr Lamb develops trust in him.

Summary of the Drama

It is the play that describes the bond of friendship between an old man and a teenage boy. A boy enters Dairy Mr. Lamb Garden. Mr. is pleased to see him. Derry's face is burnt and so he avoids the company. But Mr Lamb encourages her to love life and people. He himself is a tin leg and assures Derry that he enjoys the company of people. Denny loves his company. He goes back home and expresses his desire to give company to Mr. Lamb. His mother disagrees but he still returns to Mr. Lamb's Garden. There he sees Mr. Lamb falling to the ground trying to collect apples from the trees. He starts crying. We are moved to see his attachment to Mr Lamb, who inspired him to love himself.

Question 1 - What is that draw Derry towards Mr Lamb inspite of himself?

Answer- Lamb is lame and lonely. But she is not sad. He has a sunny outlook. He talks to Derry in a way no one has ever done. He doesn't hate Derry's burnt face. He is not afraid of ugliness, for him flowers and wild plants are plants. He Speaks Words of Hope and Courage Derry is attracted to Lamb's words, his lifestyle and friendship.

Question 2- in which section of the play does Mr Lamb display signs of loneliness and disappoint ? what are the ways in which Mr Lamb tries to overcome these feelings ?

Answer: At the end of the first scene, when Derry leaves the garden promising to return, Mr Lamb displays his loneliness and despair. He tells himself.

I'll never come back though they don't. Never come back

He overcomes these feelings by listening to the sounds of the garden. He looks at the trees and plants. He reads and books. He talks to the people who come. He makes toffee, and gives apples and pears to the children. He doesn't get lonely and despair overwhelms him.

Question 3- the Actual pain or inconvenience caused by a physical impairment is often much less then the sense of alienation felt by the person with disabilities. What is the kind of behaviour that the person expects from others?

Answer- A person suffering from physical deformity or weakness is not inferior in any way. Physical deformity is not a sin. It is not the cause or consequence of immortal behavior. Physical deformity does not cause much trouble to the physically handicapped. They learn to live with it. Often it is not even known. But if people look down on them, laugh at them, and even pity them, they become aware of it. This consciousness is painful. They feel that others see them as inferior and different. They feel lonely and unwanted. A physically handicapped person expects others to treat him like any other normal person. He wants others to be friendly and cooperative. He doesn't like to be treated differently

Question 4- will Derry get back to his old seclusion or will Mr Lamb’s brief association effect a change In the kind of life he will lead in the future?

Ans- Mr. Lamb's brief association has certainly brought about a change in Derry's approach to life. That is why he comes back to Mr. Lamb in spite of his mother. He wants to see and discover things. She has realized that the deformity of her face is a hindrance to her progress. He can get what he wants. Now he won't care if people look at his burnt face or talk about him.

Answer- Derry has burnt face . so he suffers from inferiority complex . people always say such things about him that he does not like , so he avoids company and wants to be alone . he thinks the garden is a lonely place . so he enters there .

Answer: Mr Lamb says this line over and over again. He hereby refers to the gate of his garden. By saying this he means that people are always welcome in his place. He never restricts anyone's entry into his garden. He loves their company and wants them to come to him.

Question 5-What is Mr Lamb’s garden to see Derry in his garden?

Answer – Seeing Derry in his garden, Mr Lamb asks him if he wants to get an apple. He tells her that he doesn't need to climb the wall and come there. He could have come through the gate. He makes her feel at ease. He treats her friendly.

 Question 6 – How does Derry react to see Mr Lamb in the garden?

Answer – Derry had entered the garden thinking it an empty place. When he finds Mr Lamb inside, he feels caught. He explains tp Mr Lamb that he did not intend stealing apples. He says that he liked  the place so he came to sit there .

Answer – one side of Derry’ s face is burnt . so he thinks people avoid him . he thinks that nobody likes his company or loves him . He feels that people do not accept him as a part of society . so he say that people are afraid of him .

Answer- When Mr Lamb suddenly starts talking about apples and Jelly, it makes Derry thinks that Mr Lamb is intentionally changing the subject. He thinks that Mr lambs  is afraid of talking about his ugly face . therefore , he is finding an escape in subject change .

Answer- Derry suffers from inferiority complex because of his burnt face. He feels that people are afraid of him. He thinks that no one likes or loves his company. So he avoids company and tries to be alone. He doesn't like talking to people.

Answer-Mr Lamb gives the example of ‘a flower’ and ‘a weed’. He tells that weed is also a green growing plat as is flower. So, there is no difference between a weed and flower. A weed is also as important as flower.

Answer- if in order to avoid people starting to them all the physically live together, the world will be an unpleasant place. These people will be devoid of all good things of life. They will remain cut from the mainstream of the society.

Question 12- Why does Derry go back to Mr Lamb?

Answer- Derry finds Mr Lamb ‘s talks motivating . He learns from him to overcome his sense of inferiority. He finds him a person who loves life and teaches others too to do so. He likes his company. So he goes back to him . 

Question 13- Why do Mr Lamb ‘s talks leave an impression on Derry’s mind?

Answer- Like  Derry, Mr Lamb also suffers from physical impairment . but he shows no sign of feeling himself inferior . this motivates Derry to fellow the example of Mr Lamb and live in the mainstreams . Mr lamb‘s talks leaves an impression on his mind.

Question 14- The world’s got a whole face, and the world is there to be looked at. ‘ What does Mr Lamb mean by it?

Answer – by saying so Mr lamb means that not all people in the world are indifferent to the suffers there are sensible people too who behave normally with the physically impaired persons.

Question 15 – There is nothing that God made that Doesn’t interest me .’ How do the world reflect Mr Lamb’ philosophy of life?

Answer- The world are a mirror to the way Mr Lamb Thinks and behaves . he has a positive attitude towards life . both the nature as well as human life attract him the same way . his interest in the things keeps him busy and away from negative feeling .

Question16- Who was Mr Lamb? How did Derry come in his contact?

Answer- Mr Lamb was an old man with tin feet. His real leg was blown off during the war years ago. He lived in a big house. And he had no family. When Derry was walking through Mr. Lamb's garden, he realized that the place was isolated. So he climbed the wall and entered the garden. This is how he came in contact with her.

Question 17- What did Mr Lamb. Say to Derry o his coming into his garden?

Answer: Mr. Lamb's attitude towards Derry was very gentle, protective and friendly. Giving advice and direction to the younger member like an elder in the family. Mister . Lamb advises Derry to think about the apples, lest he travel. He also advises Derry not to feel scared.

Answer- Mr lamb lost one leg in a war. There is a tin leg its place. The children would mockingly .call him Lamey –Lamb.  Also, no one ever comes to see him . people have spread many stories about him .

Answer- Derry said to Mr , Lamb, “one day, a woman went by me in street – I was at a bus stop and she was with another woman and she looked at me said slowly “ she said ‘look at the , that’s terrible thing. That’s face only mother could love.’

Answer- Mr Lamb wants to say that this is a sweet song sung for those who love music, they are just grumbling. Through these lines Mr Lamb wants to say that we should not look at people's thoughts, we should do our work, people will comment because commenting is duty or the world.

Question -24- What was the fear of man who looked up himself in a room , according to the incident told by Mr. Lamb?

Answer- There was a man who was afraid of everything, this is the world. A bus may run over him, or a man may breathe deadly germs inside him, or a donkey may kill him or lightning may strike him, or he may fall in love with a girl and leave her, that banana can slip on the skin. So he went to his room and saw the door and stopped there. A picture fell on his head from the wall and he died.

Question 25- How did Mr Lamb motivated Derry by giving the example of the organs of Derry ‘s own body?

  Answer- Mr Lamb tells Derry tells is like others , has two eyes, two ears, two legs, two arms, brain and a tongue . He can do and achieve whatever he likes . in this way Mr Lamb tries to remove baseless fears of Derry .

Answer- The street kids call Mr Lamb “ Lamey- Lamb” because he had an artificial leg of tin . one of his real leg had been blown off inn explosion of bomb . gradually , he has become used to hearing it. Now , he does not feel bad about it .   

Question 27- what did Derry say to Mr .Lamb while returning from the garden?

Answer- When Derry was returning to the house he said to Mr Lamb that he will be back in short time. He could run fast because he had not a tin leg. Moreover he wanted to inform his mother about his presence with Mr Lamb.

Answer- He has warm friends everywhere, kids call him "the lame lamb". He prepares toffees for the children. Thus Derry realizes Mr. Lamb's positive and productive approach to life. So he was impressed by the Lamb.

Answer –Derry’s mother did not have  any good opinion about Mr Lamb . she considered him to be worthless man. She thought that Mr . Lam ‘s talk was all nonsense. She did not want  Derry to go him .

Answer- When Derry reached Mr Lamb‘s garden he saw Mr Lamb with crab apples .He was surprised to find Mr Lamb lying dead on the ground.

Question 1- Give a character sketch of Mr Lamb?

Answer- Mr Lamb is the protagonist of the play 'On the Face of It'. The main features of his character are as follows.


1- Despite being physically weak, he does not consider himself less than anyone. One of his legs is of tin, but he leads a normal life.


2- He defeats his loneliness by keeping himself busy.


3- He is a nature lover. He loves his garden. He loves and bees.


4- His life is an inspiration to other physically challenged persons.


5- He has a positive attitude towards life.


6- He likes to meet and talk to people. Thus, he is a personality that everyone should follow

Question 2- Derry suffer from the inferiority complex. How far is his family responsible for this state of his mind.

Answer- Dairy's face gets burnt on one side. This makes a person feel inferior to others. He avoids company because he feels that people are afraid of his ugly face. I think his family has a big role to play in making him feel that way. They don't treat Dim like a normal teenage boy. They are very protective in his case. They show great sympathy with him. They make him feel that he will never be able to lead a normal life. He feels that he cannot do anything without them. Thus they do not allow him to develop confidence. They make her feel that she is completely dependent on them. This makes him feel inferior.

Question 3- Which story does Mr Lamb tell Derry and why?

Answer: Mr Lamb tells Derry the story of a man who was always afraid to go out. At every step, he was afraid that a bus might run over him. Or the man can breathe deadly germs on him, or a donkey can kill him, or the light can knock him down or he can fall in love with a girl and the girl will leave him. So he found himself in his room and remained on his bed. There a picture fell on his head from the wall and killed him.

He tells the story to teach Derry that being alone doesn't solve a problem. He wants to meet and talk to people

Question 4- What change did Mr Lamb bring in Derry’s attitude towards life?

Answer – Derry's face was burnt. This made him feel inferior. He used to avoid meeting and talking to people. But his transformation meeting with Mr. Lamb became a turning point in his life. One leg of Mr. Lamb was tin. But he leads a normal life like everyone else. He had no inferiority complex. He loved to eat people's meat. His life became an inspiration for Derry, he overcame his inferiority complex. Now, he gets rid of the feeling that people don't like him. He began to love life. He loved meeting and talking to people. He came out of his solitude. Thus Me Lamb brought a positive change in Derry's attitude towards life.

Question 5- What is the message of the play?

Answer- The play 'On his face' through light on the suffering of a physically disabled person. Such a person often finds himself isolated as society refuses to accept him in the mainstream. The play gives the message that such persons should be given due respect. We should treat them like normal person and help them to heal their pain. Physically handicapped persons should also not promote inferiority complex. They should consider themselves normal like everyone else. They should not impose loneliness on themselves. They should develop hobbies and engage with them. They should be friends with optimists.

Answer- Derry was a boy of fourteen years old, who turns back and has a part of his face due to irritation and scars. Derry firmly believes that people are not comfortable seeing her face. He feels that people avoid him. He thinks that no body likes or loves his company. He feels that people do not accept him as a part of the society. He suffers from an inferiority complex because of his burnt face. People constantly reminded him of his ugliness and so he stayed away from them. He realized that he was ugly enough to be liked and loved by anyone, so he became a recluse. People said it was not important how he looked, Derry knew that people lie and show sympathy, only comfort him and he would not change and keep looking like a demonic beast.

Ans- Mr Lamb was an old man who lived alone at his house. No one comes to see Mr. Lamb is retired from the army. He has lost a leg in the war. He has a garden. Children call him a lemi-lamb. People have spread stories about him. He has a tin foot. Mr. Lamb tells Derry that he has two eyes, two legs, two arms, a brain and a tongue, just like other people. He can do or achieve whatever he wants. Thus Mr. Lamb tries to allay Derry's unfounded fears. He tries to beat her too. Seeing, hearing and thinking makes him feel lonely. He didn't have any curtains on the windows because he likes natural light. He finds no difference between flowers, trees, herbs and weeds. With this thought, he tries to convince Derry

Question 8- List the example give By Mr . Lamb to motivate Derry and how did those make effect on Derry?

Ans- Some examples were given to Derry by Mr Lamb who has lost a leg in the war. He tells Derry that he is not as handicapped as her. He has two legs, two eyes, two hands. He can do anything in his life. He also advises her to have an optimistic outlook in life. He then starts explaining to Derry about his attitude towards life. He says that he is interested in everything that is created by God. He says that people say that bees buzz but they according to him. According to the Lamb, there is life in everything that grows. Weeds are also important for him. He tells Derry that it's not what he looks like, it's who he is in. This makes Derry understand that beauty lies only deep in the skin. He understands that he is not less than anyone. He can do whatever he wants.

Question 9- Why did Derry ‘s mother stop him to go to Mr .Lamb? what was her experience about the world?

Ans- Derry's mother has a special psyche about the old man, Mr Lamb, based on her Mann Ki Baat. She does not have a good opinion of Mr. Lam and therefore doubts Mr. Lam's motives. Lamb. She further thinks that Derry's scorched face will make Mr Lamb more upset and abusive and thus, advises her son to stay indoors and think whatever he wants. His mother is very suspicious of Mr Lamb. She considers him crazy. She says she heard a lot about Mr Lamb being infected, she has been warned. Although they've been living there for three months, she knows what's worth knowing and Derry isn't going back there

Answer – Mr Lamb is an important character in the lesson “ on the Face of it” . He has a tin leg. He lived alone and kept the door of his garden always  open . He knew the art of living . he was man with positive attitude . He brought a major change on Derry ‘s attitude towards life as he was full of negativity due to scare on his face . Mr Lamb was lonely person. He used to get happiness by spending tome with others and reading books.

Answer – Derry is a fourteen years old young boy whose face is half burnt because of acid spill on it. His ugly look made him a pessimist and a loner with various negative complexes.
